Sherbrooke blast injures 4

At least four people were seriously injured following an explosion in an industrial park in Sherbrooke that may have released a toxic cloud of chemicals.

Four other people are still unaccounted for.

The explosion happened at about 1:30 p.m. ET at Neptune Technologies, located in the industrial area on Pépin Street.

A fire is still burning at the site and thick black smoke can be seen for kilometers.

Firefighters are on scene and buildings surrounding the site have been evacuated.

Police have set up a large perimeter around the site and are asking people to stay away from the scene because of the risk of toxic exposure.

Smoke from burning acetone is highly dangerous and extremely flammable, according to Daniel Messier, spokesperson for Environment Quebec.

Transport Quebec closed Highway 410 in both directions between Highway 10 and de Portland Street to divert traffic from the area.

It’s unclear what caused the blast.
