Rough weather a factor in boating death, RCMP say

One man is dead and another man is recovering from exposure following a boating mishap Friday on Fishing Lake, RCMP say.

According to police, the pair found themselves in trouble around 5 p.m. CT when the motor on their boat stalled.

The weather, police said, was very poor at the time with strong winds, large waves and poor visibility on the lake, which is about 175 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.

At one point, police said, both men fell into the water. Neither were wearing life vests and only one man was able to get back into the boat.

That man was able to restart the motor and go for help.

A search of the area Friday night did not locate the other man.

But shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday, police said local searchers found the missing man’s body.

He was identified as a 52-year-old from the Pauingassi First Nation. Police said they would not be releasing his name.

The man who survived is a 19 years old, also from the Pauingassi First Nation. Police said he was treated for exposure at a nursing station.
